About Horizon
Horizon Legacy is pioneering the use of robots in construction and solving the problem of labour shortage and affordable housing. Horizon has created the first construction automation lab in Canada, located in the heart of Toronto, and looking to hire an research and development director.
You will be working with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, architects, and constructors. We hope this will be an extremely fun and challenging endeavor for the right candidate motivated by challenges and creative problem solving.
Place of work
Normal work will be in person, up to five days a week at our automation lab in Toronto near the intersection of Wilson Ave and Keele St. From time to time, you will be required to work in the field or on a construction site and may be there for weeks at a time.
Job Summary
The Research & Development (R&D) Director is essential for fostering innovation and ensuring our products are ready for commercialization. In this position, you will lead a small team of technical experts to develop products or technology that can be implemented on construction sites, revolutionizing traditional construction methods to enhance construction speed, quality, and cost-efficiency.
Responsibilities
The following are possible activities the candidate is expected to carry out as part of the work:
- Reporting to the CEO, manages the Research & Development Team; creates R&D roadmap, and prioritizes workflow to maximize innovation while managing the technical development risks, in relation to the financial budget.
- Leads the R&D team both on-site and in the lab, and when necessary, oversees the deployment team. Responsibilities include hiring, selection, training, performance appraisals, and other supervisory duties related to the R&D department.
- Ensure that R&D innovations and deliverables are tested, certified and can be commercialized (including preliminary analyses of high-level business cases). Consistently reviewing the deliverables of the R&D team by effectively reprioritizing, when necessary.
- Develops the budget of the R&D Engineering team in collaboration with CEO & CFO, consistently measuring performance against the approved budget; provides on-going status updates on the R&D portfolio of projects.
- Leads the process from R&D department to on site use in collaboration with Construction Manager to a finalized product.
- Tasked with developing technology by leveraging partners, suppliers, and industry experts within the R&D team, while collaborating closely with the deployment and construction teams.
- Create and refine research and development procedures and techniques to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- Stay informed about the latest industry trends, advancements, and competitor products to maintain a competitive edge.
- Manages risks, specifically supply chain risk, production issues, materials, pricing and the entire product life cycle and future technology or product offerings. Escalates risks to appropriately to the CEO & CFO; consistently measures and assesses risk and mitigation strategies across R&D activities.
- Employing continuous improvement methodologies to ensure recommendations, feedback, and supplier product challenges are effectively addressed and implemented.
- Purchases and manages lab equipment and supplies.
- Maintains all R&D documentation through document control methodologies, and assists with the company’s protection of intellectual property (IP).
- You are on the Senior Management team, and together we will develop business plans, strategic initiatives, and the development of new projects, products, services, and solutions.
- Plays a significant role in developing the safety program for the onsite lab team.
Educational Background:
- Relevant degree (master’s degree or professional certification desirable) in a field such as engineering, robotics, technology, science.
Experience:
- Extensive experience in research and development, with a proven track record of successful project management and product development.
- This work would be ideally suited for someone with a background in: Robotics Field Service Engineer, Robot Technician, Automotive manufacturing, technician, or automation.
